Like many product managers out there, I didn’t initially choose this career path; instead, I transitioned from a technical role. When I first took the plunge into product management, I sought advice from a seasoned PM who responded with the rather vague guidance of, “I guess you learn it by doing it.”
Now, years later, I find myself on the other side of that question, offering advice to new and aspiring PMs who are keen to understand what they should focus on to navigate this complex field effectively.
Looking back, learning product management through trial and error was a challenging journey, one that had more errors than successes. I spent considerable time and energy navigating a maze of mostly avoidable mistakes. The role itself is complex and multifaceted and involves business acumen, technical expertise, and essential soft skills like leadership and communication. Learning this complex domain without a roadmap can overwhelming and full of avoidable errors.
To provide a more structured approach to this question, a while back I compiled a comprehensive roadmap and syllabus that spans a wide array of topics in Product Management, from the foundational to the advanced. While I won’t claim this syllabus to be a complete guide to mastering product management, it does represent the core areas that I would prioritize and tackle methodically if I were to start this journey all over again.
